This spring we planted three different tomatoes, squash, cucumber, green peppers, and lettuce - you can read the story about how we put our garden together as a family here.
The lettuce started growing quickly. We enjoyed it well into the end of May but it kept bolting - meaning it would grow tall instead of wide and began to taste bitter. After replacing it a few times we decided we would spend our time and energy on the other plants instead.
Our tomatoes have started to come in. We planted Big Beef, Better Boy and a heirloom tomato. We have yet to taste a heirloom but so far I think my favorite is the Big Beef. The perfect amount of juicy tenderness for a tomato sandwich - (which I have had for lunch everyday the past week... and I plan on having everyday for the rest of the summer).
We have a few cucumbers and squash coming in now too, but haven't picked them yet. I think they should be ready towards the end of the week.
The green peppers still haven't come in, although we've seen lots of blooms so hopefully they will turn into peppers soon.
It wouldn't be right if I didn't praise my husband for the amount of work he has put into our garden. While the kids and I help water it, he does most of the tender-love-and-care. In fact, last week Chloe and I picked the first tomato and sliced it open before Dada even got home from work. Oops, maybe that wasn't very nice.
We've already talked about how to make our garden bigger and better next year, and not only do I love having fresh vegetables to eat, I love that it has now become part of our routine and I see it growing each year.
The same time we planted our vegetable garden we also planted a wildflower garden. Every couple of days hubby picks fresh flowers and brings them to me.
He gives me butterflies every time he comes in the house with a big smile and a handful of beautiful flowers.
Eating a tomato sandwich with freshly picked wildflowers from my hubby is a pretty nice way to eat lunch. I'd say our garden has been a success so far this summer.
